CHAPTER SIXTEEN
Crystal wanted to stay furious. She told herself that she would have liked to know all this stuff before she signed up for the job. If she had, she would not have agreed to work for Christensen. You know thatâs not true⦠Crystal blew an impatient exhale. In truth, she had been drawn to her from the word go. Knowing that there was a lot more to her campaign than Abigail let on officially also made her curious. She looked at her, aware that leaving had never even been an option.
âYes,â she nodded. âIâm okay. Weâre fine.â
âAnd youâre happy to stay on as my CPO?â
Abigail looked worried, incredibly anxious. Crystal flashed her a reassuring smile, just the right side of cocky.
âDespite the enormity of the challenge, and the insanity of your mission,â she replied. âThe answer is yes, Ms Christensen. Iâll have one hell of a good crack at it.â
Abigail touched her hand.
âThank you,â she murmured.
They both jumped as the lights suddenly came back on, and someone knocked softly on the door.
âItâs me, and Tom,â Russell announced.
Crystal opened the door. He glanced at her as he came in.
âSee,â he remarked with a knowing grin. âIâm learning.â
âGood man,â Crystal approved, smiling back.
He went straight to the couch and started to brief Abigail on the latest press updates regarding Birchâs death, how they were handling requests for reactions, and her upcoming schedule. He looked sad and properly exhausted, just like his boss did. While they were catching up, Crystal also took the opportunity to share a quiet word with Greer.
âEverything okay with you and Matt?â she asked.
âAll good, Crys, no worries. Iâm on watch until midnight, then heâll be on.â He cracked a wry smile. âItâs all kicking off, uh? Should have known this job would be fun, since you were involved.â
âYeah,â Crystal shrugged. âI guess so, hey.â
âJokes aside,â Greer added in a lower tone. âWe realise the seriousness of the mission, and everything that is truly at stake here. Weâve got their backs. And yours as well, Thor.â
âRoger that,â Crystal approved. âThanks, as always.â
âSure thing. See you later.â
As Greer left, Abigail beckoned her over.
âCrys? Do you have a minute?â
She looked solemn and determined, her face grave yet calm. Now this, Crystal reflected, is what a Commander-in-Chief should look like⦠Her mind was still reeling from Abigailâs revelations. She had questions, lots of them, and one in particular had her tongue on fire. But Abigail spoke first, in a clear and decisive voice.
âHereâs the schedule for tomorrow,â she announced.
Crystal swallowed back her impatience.
âIâm listening,â she nodded.
âIâll be doing a series of interviews at the local News station in the morning. Weâve got two town halls in the afternoon, and a meet-and-greet at a Farmersâ Market to follow. Once weâre done with that, weâll be driving on to Waterloo in the evening.â
Crystal suppressed a frustrated sigh. Abigail already knew what she thought of those open and close interactions with the public. It would be so easy for a killer to infiltrate the
